I Am Salmon

In 1994, acclaimed primatologist Jane Goodall visited Seattle at the invitation of One Reel. Seeing the company's international connections as well as its creative approach to festivals and the arts, Dr. Goodall challenged the organization to use its arts focus and international contacts to educate children and protect the environment. This collection of projects is One Reel's response.

One Reel quickly identified salmon as a cultural inspiration for the Pacific Northwest, as well as a link to communities and traditions around the North Pacific Rim and symbol of our economic and environmental health. Thus Dr. Goodall's challenge spawned a series of ongoing educational and cultural exchange projects with salmon as a central theme.

A broad and wide-ranging effort, First Fish: One Reel's Wild Salmon Project includes hands-on public visual art projects, a curriculum for middle school students, a published anthology of salmon tales and traditions of the North Pacific Rim, international conferences of ecologists and educators, community theater projects in salmon spawning grounds, a video and publication project for King County, and a multilingual Web site connecting children in salmon cultures around the Pacific Rim.
